One of the most wonderful gifts ever given to us by God is the gift of friendship. He knew that there would be times in our lives when we would need to be lifted up, so He handpicked a unique group of people to fulfill our needs. Friends provide comfort, companionship, honesty, support and humor, but the most important quality they give us is their love. It would be a very sad and lonely world without friends. In fact the Bible gives us stories of the many friendships Jesus made throughout His ministry. The Bible also lists several verses to give us encouragement and provide us with commandments to live by. One of these commandments is an important truth of what true, godly love is. It is found in the book of John.
John 15:12-13 NLT
“This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
Wow! Here you thought that friendship only required you to love someone with all your heart and soul, but now you are being told that you also need to lay down your life for them! Would God really want us to give up our lives for someone we love, a friend? Yes, but we need to understand the phrase “laying down one’s life” is a way for God to tell us that we should love our friends more than we love ourselves. When you practice this, you always want their happiness, their respect, and you get excited when something good happens in their lives. Love is something we should never have to consciously think about. When we decide to love someone, to bring them into our lives, we do it deliberately.
“God determines who walks into your life….it’s up to you to decide who you let walk away, who you let stay, and who you refuse to let go.” (author unknown)
Let’s thank God today; that He knows exactly who we need in our lives and the right time to bring them to us. One of my dearest friends once told me that God knows that one person could never meet all of our needs. That must be why He blesses our lives with so many different people. I know that I couldn’t make it without the friendships I currently have. I’ve been blessed in the past and continue to be blessed right now.
Proverbs 17:17 NIV
A friend loves at all times
Please pray with me:
We come to You today in thanks for bringing
so many wonderful people into our hearts.
Let us be willing to lay our lives down for our friends;
by loving them more than we love ourselves,
by always putting their needs before our own,
and by loving them deliberately.
It’s such a great blessing and surprise when
You bring two people together to share in Your love.
Thank You for knowing our needs and for Your
In Your Holy name I pray,
“A true friend is someone who reaches out for your hand and touches your Heart.”
