The quick flash of blue caught my eye and caused me to gasp in surprise. I had spent all winter watching the same finches, chickadees, and sparrows visit my feeders, but today was different; today a beautiful new color showed up in the form of an Indigo Bunting. What a gift from God!
As I sat there watching this gorgeous blue bird, I wondered if God feels the same way when He looks at us. Does He experience the same loss of breath at our beauty? Does He gasp in pleasure at the knowledge of how unique we are? Among the different varieties, flavors, colors, shapes, and sizes that make up who we are, does He ever tire of watching us?
You may be thinking “there’s nothing really unique or different about me,” but there is. God created each one of us for a reason. Our personalities allow us to stand out, and through our likes and dislikes, we’re always giving Him a reason to smile.
I am unique
There are so many things that I love to do and experience. Like smelling fresh cut grass in the summer, and dry rustling leaves in the autumn, touching the chocolate that oozes out of a cookie hot from the oven and then immediately eating it before it melts all over my hand.
I love the feel of my dog’s wet nose as he brushes up against the back of my hand in an effort to get my attention, wearing my pajamas until noon, but really wishing I could stay in them all day, making my best friends laugh by saying something ridiculous only they would understand, and watching my husband fall asleep in the recliner, comforted in the knowledge that he is there.
I love staying up late on a Friday night just because I can, and then wondering why I did so the next day, dancing and singing around in my bedroom thinking I’m alone, but laughing when I realize my husband had been watching me the entire time, and then there’s nothing more wonderful than standing outside in a misty rain with my face upturned and my eyes closed, experiencing the feel of God’s gentle touch against my cheeks.
“The LORD formed me from the beginning, before he created anything else. Before the mountains were formed, before the hills, I was born.” (Proverbs 8:22, 25 NLT)
God did indeed make each one of us unique, as unique as the stars in the sky, and the grains of sand washing up on a beach. We are wonderful miracles designed exclusively for His pleasure, and I believe He loves nothing more than to see us enjoying life both joyfully and with abandon.
Unique to God, beautiful in His eyes
So today, I’m asking you to open your heart and realize that your personality traits were given to you for a reason. You are beautiful and unique, just as God made you. Embrace those differences and praise Him for His marvelous workmanship. Sweet friend, please never compare yourself to someone else; your likes and dislikes come from your heart, and for that very reason God loves every beautiful inch of you.
Join me in prayer
I praise You for the differences that make up our personalities. I smile when I think about how You knew exactly what You were doing when You created us.
Thank You for giving us the opportunity to have so many choices, for being able to dream and plan, and to have the ability to experience so many wonderful sights, sounds, and smells.
We understand that You made us for a reason, so we want to embrace Your perfect plan, and praise You for every single personality trait we possess. Thank You for creating us and making us so different from each other, for we love You for it.
In Jesus’ name I pray
