Praying when things are falling apart

Over the last three weeks we’ve been learning about how valuable prayer is to us. We’ve discovered The gift of prayer, and the importance of prayer, and we know He hears our prayers.

There’s absolutely nothing prayer can’t accomplish. We should pray when we feel like praying, and when we don’t. Pray when our heart is full, and when our heart is empty, pray when we have it all together, or when things are falling apart.*
But what about those days when our world is falling apart? What about when our heart is so overwhelmed we can’t put one foot in front of the other, let alone form a cohesive thought. Through experience, I’ve discovered two ways to continue praying during these times.
Prayer through the help of the Spirit of God
Before ascending to heaven, Jesus told His disciples ‘His Father would be sending them an advocate in the form of the Holy Spirit to teach them.’ (John 14:26) He wanted them to know that even though He could no longer be with them in the flesh, His Spirit would remain with them forever. No matter how heavy our hearts might be, we can still pray through the help of the Spirit.
It gives me great comfort to know that my prayers do not have to be eloquent, lengthy, or even spoken in words to be heard by my Savior. All it requires is a burdened heart seeking His guidance and help; He will take care of the rest.
God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans.
Romans 8:26 The Message
Prayer through the help of Prayer Warriors
God gives us the Spirit, but He also provide help through human intercession. We all experience times when we cant pray for ourselves, so the knowledge that someone else is praying is enough to help us through a bad day, week, or simply a moment of unease.
I’m immensely blessed through the prayer warriors in my life. I have a select few who would drop to their knees for me at a moments notice, and they know they can rely on me for the same thing. There’s nothing like knowing you have someone willing to walk through the trenches of life with you, holding your hand when it’s most needed, providing the necessary encouragement to keep you moving forward, and interlocking their shields and armor with yours to fight off the worst of those bad days.
‘Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and  through the love of the Spirit,  that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me...’
Romans 15:30 NKJV
Prayer really is a beautiful gift given to us by God and it truly does make a difference. It brings wisdom, provides answers to our questions, and mends broken hearts. It’s the medicine our souls need when nothing else is able to provide a cure, and it makes having a relationship with God a reality. Prayer lets us pour our souls out to Him without a trace of judgement or condemnation, and gives us the freedom to release all of our heavy burdens in the knowledge that He will carry them for us.
Thank you for standing with me as we’ve taken a look at prayer and how much it adds to our lives.
Let’s pray
Father,
Thank you for the glorious gift of prayer. Help us to realize all that You gave away in order for us to have this gift. We send up a beautiful fragrance to You as we give You the praise for all of our many blessings.
In Your name I pray,
Amen

  1. Thank you for your words. Today in church we sang a song with a phrase that went something like deep cries to God. That is how I am picturing prayer today…going deeper with him means crying out to Him from deep within me.

  2. Hi Salina, thank you for your prayerful post. I love how God thinks of everything we need; the detail that He has provided for us, when He knows we need it the most. So thankful.
